Halle' Prewitt
Hey travelers, Meet Halle! Halle is a senior at thee illustrious Spelman College and has recently traveled to Brazil! Continue reading to learn about must-see spots, recommendations, and cultural history.
CULTURE
In the picture, above, you can see Halle posing next to bright neon wristbands. But, what do the bands symbolize? The neon wristlets are known as Bahia Bands. "Bahia, Brazil is a region highly influenced by African natives, beliefs and customs. The colors and benefits of wearing specific colored Brazilian Wish Bracelets is said to correspond and intertwine with African deities and Catholic beliefs. Today, ribbons are still worn but the tradition of tying the Bahia Bands on the church gates and wearing them symbolize luck has lived on! ".
“You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food.”
FOOD
Traditional foods are a MUST when traveling! Tasting traditional foods helps to emerge one into the culture, without it one cannot feel complete. “The food in Brazil was literally amazing and so much better than expected. My host parents made sure that I had the opportunity to taste all the traditional foods; however, my favorite thing I experienced was a “Caipirinha,” which is a cocktail. This is Brazil’s national cocktail and most common alcoholic beverage. I really recommend people try it".
“Fashion in Salvador, Brazil consisted of bright colors and sandals”
MUST SEE SPOTS
If your looking for "must see" locations I would recommend Pelourinho, Brazil. This is a historic site where slaves were sold to the slave market to work on sugar plantations. This beautiful town has been preserved and is full of brightly colored houses and historical churches.
"Next time I study abroad or travel abroad, the only things I need are my Nikon camera and my journal!"
Traveling abroad can bring out the spontaneous side of person, Halle's adventurous side consisted of kayaking with random locals. HOW FUN!
RECOMMENDATIONS
I would highly recommend not over packing; I literally couldn’t stress this enough! Although I watched tons of YouTube videos on how to pack for going abroad I still found myself packing way too much. I would mostly just recommend investing in a camera and a journal and fully emerging yourself in the culture because this may be a one-time experience. I would also recommend completely separating yourself from situations at home and making the most out of your trip by actively learning.
