I've had the pleasure of knowing Zahara since our Sophomore year of high school. A sweet person she is, she also enjoys reading, music, dancing, and now traveling. Recently she traveled with the University of Louisville's ISLP abroad trip to Gaborone, Botswana. Returning to the motherland is an indescribable experience. Follow along to get a glimpse of the ancient world originally known as "Kemet" which means "The black land"
Animal reservations are one of the many things to see while in southern African countries. Although some animals are heavily monitored, they are safe. I'm for every animal living their life wild and free but I also think reservations protect animals from potential poachers.
Zahara was able to indulge in some native foods. She tried the Mopane Worm from a local food market. This may be yuck to some but it is one of Zimbabwe's favorite snack. Did someone say Protein!?
Shopping is universal. When you think Africa you think print/tribal clothing. Zahara says our culture has a bigger impact than you think. They wore "American Clothing".
"My favorite location was the game reserve where I was able to see my favorite animal, the Giraffe"
One geniune thing Zee took away from her experience to Botswana was "The beauty of black people and being so pure" Meaning we (African Americans) are consistently surrounded by American pop culture aka white wash culture. We don't get to see dark natural beauty every where we go. It's relieving to know were appreciated in the motherland.
One of the craziest things Zee tried overseas was mixing wine with sprite. I have no clue what that tastes like but it could be something worth trying.
While Souvenirs are more on the pricey side, getting your hair braided is not. Zahara was able to get her hair braided for a super low amount. She said it was the least expensive thing she invested in while in Botswana
Take trips with others so that you can take more from the trip and from the people you travel with.
I don't know if Zahara took a quick trip to outer space or what but this picture is awesome.
